A very reliable destination to meet locals and to enjoy Sake in Kyoto
Masuya gives me a very unforgettable memory to meet people, including foreigners, and to have a good time with a good quality’s sake. It’s located in a hidden place in Kyoto, yet at the center. https://sharing-kyoto.com/eat_Masuya-Saketen
Masuya is a so-called standing Sake bar as it provides a tasty compliment for sake (Tumami in Japanese). Their food and Sake selection is specifically well-selected. As to Sake, Akisika from Osaka, Tomizakura from Shimane, 59 Takechiyo Aiyama from Nigata are served, to name some.
On the other hand, for food, sliced raw free-range chicken and other simple but tasty Japanse menu items at a reasonable price (something like 500yen to 700 yen). These are not lavish servings, yet good size for solo or double eaters. So, if you have 2000Yen in your pocket, this budget enables you to enjoy some glasses of Sake and Tumami. This admirable feature is a resource to gain popularity as a casual bar.
Another lure to drop by there is the round table at the corner by the entrance of this bar. This accommodation gives the solo drinker a chance to start a chat with unknown people naturally because people have to face each other due to this shape. Meanwhile, Masuya has a long counter surrounding its kitchen, which suits for couples.

I met some locals there and learned some informative info about Kitagamo-shrine, The first one is one of the cultural heritage sites designated by UNESCO
.
The second one is a casual eating place called Imai. Simmered Mackel is a signature menu. So every visitor seemed to lave this handy menu item, yet cooked by elaborated recipe. It costs you only 720yen. Incredible!
Eventually, getting the info led me to visit this shrine the next day.
Of course, there would be many good places for the first visitors to Kyoto to have localized eating experience. But regarding a reliable place to meet friendly locals, there are a few as far as I know. This Masuya must be listed as a highly possible site to meet your expectations based on my experience.
